Filing Alert: Redeemer Health Chapter 11
Redeemer Health Files Chapter 11 in Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Update (November 2, 2026): A comprehensive case summary is now available for the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of Redeemer Health.
Redeemer Health and its debtor affiliates⁽¹⁾, a Meadowbrook, PA-based health care system providing hospital, home care, hospice, and senior living services, filed for Chapter 11 protection on Nov. 1 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The debtors are using Chapter 11 to exit acute care and reorganize their post-acute and life care operations. The company attributes its distress to sustained losses at Holy Redeemer Hospital and its physician network, which have lost between $31.6 million and $48.9 million a year over the past five years. The debtors attribute those losses to the hospital’s location and scale, competition from larger area hospital systems and a declining local market, and say their community and post-acute services, which have partially supported the hospital and physician network, can no longer keep pace. For fiscal 2026 through April 30, the consolidated operating loss reached $34.6 million against a budgeted loss of $17.1 million. Lacking the liquidity to make the bond payment due in September 2026, Holy Redeemer Health System and HR Physician Services, the obligors on the bond debt, defaulted, and liquidity constraints left the debtors unable to pay trade debt when due.
Redeemer Health’s board of trustees has determined that continuing to operate the hospital is not sustainable and has decided to sell and/or close it in accordance with Pennsylvania law. The debtors are exploring a transition of the hospital and physician network to a buyer while developing a wind-down plan in case a going-concern sale is not possible. They intend to keep their senior care and life care services, invest in their post-acute operations and reorganize the post-acute and life care entities so they emerge from Chapter 11 financially stable. The debtors will fund the cases with their board-designated endowment, operating revenues and cash collateral. Holy Redeemer Health System and HR Physician Services are seeking to use the bondholders’ cash collateral, offering replacement liens, a superpriority claim and an interest in additional bond collateral as adequate protection, subject to ongoing negotiations with UMB Bank as master trustee.
Redeemer Health reports $0 to $50 thousand in assets and $0 to $50 thousand in liabilities⁽²⁾. The filing indicates that there will be funds available for distribution to unsecured creditors. The case number is 26-14631.
